Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province of China, witnessed the rampant spreading of the covid-19 epidemic at the beginning of 2020. The Chinese people have stood together in the most trying of times to combat the epidemic. On Feb. 2nd, the Student Union of Youth League Committee of the High School Attached to NWNU actively called on the students and their parents, teachers and alumni to raise money to fight against the Covid-19 epidemic. Totally, 130117.24 Yuan RMB has been raised within a short time of four days and the funds raised were donated to the First Hospital of Lanzhou University and Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University through Gansu Youth Development Foundation on Feb. 13. Great efforts have been made in the fund-raising event independently advocated by the Student Union cadres of Youth League Committee. The followings are the conversation between the reporter and some main organizers.
  1. Why do you want to organize the fund-raising?
(Wang Chengxuan, Chairman of the Student Union of the High School Attached to NWNU) I have learned from the news that the epidemic situation is getting worse and worse day by day and I feel quite worried about the short supply of protective equipment and disinfection articles which are necessities for medical workers. Those who bring firewood for all shall not freeze to death in the wind and snow. Although I can’t provide some direct help for those medical workers at the front line as an ordinary student, I still hope that I can make my own contribution to fighting against covid-19. When one of my schoolmates puts forward the idea of raising funds, we act promptly after contacting with the school teachers to discuss some details.

  1. What difficulties have you encountered in the fund-raising?
(Wang Chengxuan, Chairman of the Student Union of the High School Attached to NWNU) Actually, there are many difficulties. At the beginning, we have decided to directly donate some materials to hospitals, but later we find that the medical supplies such as masks and disinfectant are very scare and not available to buy. Another problem is how to guarantee the openness and transparency of the donation, which is of great significance to us. The school leaders, after communicating with officials from Gansu Youth League Committee several times, give guidance to us in detail, which guarantees the success of fund-raising in accordance with Chinese laws and regulations.

  1. What do you think of the event as a whole?
(Wang Chengxuan, Chairman of the Student Union of the High School Attached to NWNU) The most impressive thing for me is the enthusiasm given by students and their parents and teachers of the High School Attached to NWNU. As soon as the written proposal for fund-raising is sent out, everyone in the high school makes responses actively and the funds have been deposited into a special account continuously, which represents the good quality and strong sense of social responsibility of the teachers, students and their parents. I’m very proud of it.

  1. As the financial statistician in the fund-raising, what’s your deepest feeling?
(Su Zixiang, a student from the Public Relations Department of the Student Union) The number of donors and the amount of the raised money is largely beyond our expectations. We have received the fund for 575 times with an amount of 99785.31 Yuan RMB. It has been calculated that a donation shall be received per 1.2 minutes on average from 10:30 A.M. to 24:00 P.M. of February 2nd , covering 80% the total amount of the raised fund. I have dealt with it carefully and patiently although the task is really very heavy. In order to be worthy of the benevolence of every student, teacher and even strange person, I just keep sitting in front of the computer all the time to make sure the smooth progress of fund-raising. When I am doing this work, I have a very complex feeling. On one hand, I feel so sad because it should have been a wonderful time for family reunion if there is no epidemic. On the other hand, the “staggering” amount of raised money tells us that how moving it is to see so many people have made their own contributions as much as they can in such a difficult time.
  1. What thoughts does it bring to you?
(Sun Ruisi, another student from the Public Relations Department of the Student Union) In the process of contacting with some hospitals in need of materials and some factories available for materials, I find the real difficulty in the war against Covid-19 is severe lack of supplies. The fund-raising contributes to enhancing my sense of social responsibility. As a high school student, we should learn to show our love and responsibilities through actions. Your givings each time will bring people in danger or those trapped in the epidemic hope and love.
The students hoped that what they had done could bring warmth to those medical workers who were still working in the front to fight against the epidemic and thanked all these heroes sacrificing themselves for all. Everyone is waiting their safe returning.
The students of the High School Attached to NWNU showed their sense of responsibility and mission through actual practices. The spirit of an era is represented by the spirit of young people. The Chinese people all firmly believe that we are determined to win the war against Covid-19.
